Every year at this time, my life becomes consumed by one thing: The OSCARS. My love of movies peeks every year this time as the oscar race begins. I follow predictions of nominations, rumors and speculation about the academy and I see the nominees to judge for myself.
My favorite magazine, Entertainment Weekly, puts out a list that becomes my commandments. It is the 25 movies to see before Oscar Night. I finally got this years issue and here is the list (in order).
Up in the Air
The Hurt Locker
A Serious Man
Julie & Julia
A Single Man
The Blind Side
The Last Station
Fantastic Mr. Fox
The Lovely Bones
(500) Days of Summer
The Young Victoria*
So far, I have seen 7 (marked by *). I am so behind. Thank god FIT’s winter break is not over until the first week of February, so I can catch up a little bit. Last year I broke my own record and saw 15 of the 25 movies. This year I want to do better. The list is more important than ever this year because the Academy has changed the rules again. There will be 10 nominations for the category of Best Picture, instead of the previous 5. That means 10 movies I must see. The official nominations are being announced on February 2nd, but in the meantime, I am going with this list.
The Oscars will air on March 7th. The host has not been announced, but veteran Billy Crystal is getting a lot of attention for the honor. I have 2 months and 18 movies to go. I need to go the theatre right now.
footnote: If you want to see any of the above with me, let me know. I love a fellow movie lover.
Married… the sequel.
July 17, 2009
When I had the opportunity to take advantage of a free satellite dish while i was home a week ago, I finally watched Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married? I loved it, and i do recommend that movie. Jill Scott blew me away. But this is not about that.
This is about the sequel. Tyler Perry is making Why Did I Get Married Too? Filming has begun in Atlanta. Most of the original cast is on board, including Janet Jackson. Jill Scott is still rumored. I hope she does it, it will not be the same without her.
Why a sequel? Tyler Perry recently told Black Voices:
“Because there is so much I want to say. There’s not another film that I have written that I felt like there’s more to say; and there’s more say in ‘Why Did I Get Married Too.”
I am excited for the sequel. Usually they make me nervous, but if you think about, every Tyler Perry movie is basically a sequel to the prior. I think it will be good, if Jill is involved. The scheduled release date is April 2, 2010.
footnote: Tyler Perry’s next flim is I Can Do Bad All By Myself and it will be released Septermber 11, 2009. I have the DVD of Perry’s original play I Can Do Bad All By Myself and it is amazing. I cannot with for the film adaptation.
Today was not okay.

The entertainment industry lost two timeless icons today. Farrah Fawcett (62) and Michael Jackson (50) both passed away today. I am heart-broken and shocked. Both of these stars are legends whose legacy will live on.
Farrah Fawcett lost her battle to cancer this morning. She is best known for her role as Jill Munroe on the T.V. series Charlie’s Angels. She is a multiple Emmy and Golden Globe Nominee. Farrah Fawcett is also know as a sex symbol for her best-selling poster (seen above). Her beautiful golden hair was world renowned and the style is now named after her. She is truly an American treasure and will be missed.
Michael Jackson is simply the King of Pop. He was collapsed in his home today and was suffering from cardiac arrest. He passed away this afternoon. His career began at an early age of 8 in the hit group the Jackson 5. After years of physical and mental abuse from this father, Michael Jackson broke off into a solo career that has yet to be topped.
He went on to make classic albums including Off the Wall and Thriller (the best selling album of all time). As Michael grew older, so did his career. Although the media became more focused on the negative aspects of his career, including his changing physical image and his trial with child molestation, Michael Jackson remains the best performer of all time. Jackson was working on a comeback tour that was set to start in London in two weeks.
The world is shocked from the loss of this legend. I would not be surpised to see the world react similarly as the loss of Princess Diana. Like Princess Di, everyone loved Michael. Dispite the rough patches of his career, I am sure Michael Jackson will be remembered for his music and untouchable talent. R.I.P. Michael and Farrah. My thoughts are will both of your families and friends.
