Watch out Nicki!
March 18, 2010
Keys open Doors. Four days ago, Baltimore rap-tress Keys released a cover/diss-track of Nicki Minaj’s ‘Itty Bitty Piggy’. She does not hold back. Not only can she rhyme, but she is smart. Since Baltimore’s rising female MC, Rye Rye, got pregnant at 18 last year, I had lost hope for another female rapper from Baltimore.
Nicki Minaj is still my obsession right now and that is not changing, but I do love competition. As long as this girl fight stays on wax, I can’t get enough. I expect big things for this girl but I’m waiting for Nicki’s rebuttal. Check Keys out above!
The 1 2 watch

Attention! The large void in the female MC game is about to be filled. Nicki Minaj has already proven that she has the fire power to do so. Originally from Queens, NY, Nicki is new ‘first lady’ of Young Money. Her verse on the rap group’s single “Bedrock” has become the anthem for all women who aren’t afraid to flaunt their sexuality and her single “I Get Crazy” (featuring Lil’ Wanye) is blowing up the clubs. Not to mention her mixtapes are doing so well they might as well be albums.
The self-proclaimed ‘mistress’ is being compared to her Young Money teammate Drake for her contemporary and clever rhymes. Like vintage Lil´ Wayne, Drake and Nicki have really mastered the art of twisting words to make a line more clever than the laws of proper english allow.
I love female MCs. I think any woman who has the balls to step into any industry heavily dominated by men deserves her respect. And when you do it well, you gain a fan. The thing I like most about female MCs is there take on sexuality. It puts women in control which is refreshing when the rap industry constantly portrays women as submissive. Nicki takes female sexuality in hip-hop to another level with her graphic creativity. That’s what makes her fun and interesting to listen to.
This last semester, like I said in an earlier post, was unbelievably intense. The work load plus my non-stop schedule made it one of the hardest things I have ever done. But Nicki Minaj got me through. I listened to her mixtape It´s Barbie Bitch on repeat. It´s two-minute samples of songs keeps your attention, while her amazingly witty lyrics make you listen closely.
Although this post is long overdue, and she is already blowing up, Nicki Minaj is the 1 2 watch.
footnote: Above is the ‘music video’ for “Itty Bitty Piggy” (one of my favorite tracks on her mixtape). Below is a video of Nicki and former 1 2 watch Wale going at it. Enjoy.
